Obituary of Therese M. Powell

Therese M. Powell, 96, of Stamford, passed away at her home on Thursday morning, January 23, 2025, in the care of her loving family.

Born on April 12, 1928, in New York City, Therese was the daughter of the late Richard A. and Jeanette A. (Zacchio) Brown.

A 1946 graduate of Sewanhaka High School, Therese attended business school and became a secretary for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in New York City

On May 20th, 1950 she married the love of her life Boyd Powell and moved to Stamford, New York, where the couple established Greenbriar Farm. Therese and Boyd were married for 48 years before his passing in 1998. During those 48 years, they raised nine children while working side by side in the day-to-day operation of the family dairy farm.  On the farm, Therese also assisted with raising bees for honey, making maple syrup and later, making apple cider.

Therese enjoyed crocheting, knitting, gardening, and cooking. She loved to get together with family and friends for a challenging game of Scrabble or cards. She participated in and enjoyed all aspects of farm life.  She had a great appreciation for music and a talent to play several instruments.  She played the accordion for a radio broadcast in her youth, the organ any chance she could, and the clarinet in the Cooperstown community band later in life.  She baked and decorated birthday and wedding cakes for family and friends and was well known for her delicious pies.  She loved to travel and was always up for an adventure. She had a kind and generous heart, was a hard worker, upbeat and never complained, even when life got tough. A more gentle and patient person you will never meet.  She was a woman of great faith and a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Church. She took part in many community service events as a member of the Windy Ridge Grange. However, her greatest passion was her family.  She was a loving mother and wife as well as a proud grandmother.

Besides her parents and her husband, Therese was predeceased by a son: John Powell; and a grandson: Scott Powell.

She is survived by her children: Peter (Rose Cibelli) Powell of Stamford, Virginia (Jarry) Wilday of Sharon Springs, Tim (Becky Smith) Powell of Stamford; Boyd (Kelly Alexander) Powell of Stamford; Jeff (Liz) Powell of Stamford, Laurie (David) Fallon of Stamford; Patricia (Barry) Wagner of Stamford and Mark Powell of Stamford;  fourteen grandchildren: Shannon, Petie, Adam, Danielle, Christopher, Erin, Brenna, Brielle, Dakotah, Erick, Michelle, Katlyn, Megan and Taryn;  seventeen great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law: Eva Powell of Texas; sister: Virginia Sprague of New Jersey; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins, and her ever faithful dog, Willow.

Friends and relatives are invited to call on the family from 4-7PM on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 15 Buntline Drive, Stamford, NY.  A Mass will be given in celebration at 1PM on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, NY.
