Obituary of Florence J. Grill
It is with great earthly sadness but also great heavenly joy that we mourn the loss of our mother, Florence J. Grill. Jesus called her home on Saturday, December 28, 2024, with her loving family by her side. She is now at peace.
Mrs. Grill/Florence/Florci or Chickie, however she was affectionately known, was born in Amsterdam, NY on May 24, 1936, to the late John & Bernice Jedrzejewski. After graduating high school, Florence attended Oneonta Teacher’s College (SUNY Oneonta), graduating in 1957. While there, she met her future husband, Walter Grill and they married in 1958. In the early 1960’s Florence & Walt planted roots in Delancey, NY where many treasured memories were made while raising their four children.
Florence - ‘Mrs. Grill’- taught at Delaware Academy in Delhi for 26 years and always said fifth grade was the best grade to teach. After retiring in 1996, she was blessed to have a second career she also enjoyed, helping patrons at the Cannon Free Library in Delhi.
But her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grand and great grandchildren. When Grandma/Grandmother or Triple G, as she was also affectionately known by, wasn’t spending time with them, Florence’s favorite pastimes were getting her hair done and playing Bingo at the Delhi American Legion. Mrs. Grill and her grandson Franklin also became regulars at the Delhi Diner. Reading, doing embroidery, and enjoying a good, hot cup of tea were also favorite pastimes.
Florence was a longtime, dedicated communicant of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Delhi. Her faith was very important to her.
Survivors include her four loving children: John (Kathi), Chris (Laura), Mary Cottrell, and Pam (Wayne) Metlicke; beloved grandchildren: Mathew (Jenn), Sarah (Dave), Justin, Ryan (Christin), Katherine, Lauren, Brooke, Hannah and “her boy” Franklin; beloved great-grandchildren: Madison, Johanna, Jack, Hazel, Rowe Florence, and another one on the way. She is also survived by 3 cherished sisters, 2 brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Florence was predeceased by her husband in 2013 and son-in-law, Jeffrey Cottrell, in 2011.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Per Florence’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. A mass with a reception to follow will take place at 11am on Saturday, January 11th, 2025, at St. John Episcopal Church, Delhi.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to: St. John Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 121 Delhi, NY; Helios Care, 297 River St Service Rd, Oneonta, NY; or the Cannon Free Library 40 Elm Street, Delhi, NY.
