Obituary of Robert W. Stevens

Robert William Stevens

Dec. 19, 1933 – Oct. 17, 2024

Robert (Bob) passed away in his hometown of Andes, NY on October 17, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones.

Bob was born December 19, 1933 on the family dairy farm on Fish Hollow Road in Andes.  He was the son of Ernest A. and Elizabeth L. Scott Stevens.  He and his older brother Doug walked over the hill and attended a one room school house on Terry Clove through second grade.  In third grade he started attending Andes Central School, he graduated from ACS in 1951.  In 1950 his father purchased the Scott farm on Fall Clove and Bob and his parents moved there and began farming.  In May 1955 at the Cabin Hill Presbyterian Church, Bob married the girl next door, Frances E. Peck.   Together they ran the dairy farm until 1985.  While farming Bob also hauled canned milk from local dairy farms to the Andes Creamery.  After retiring from farming Bob worked at Decker’s Inc. in Andes where he mixed feed, made deliveries and enjoyed meeting and working with people and driving the back roads of Andes.  Dairy farming was in his blood and Bob enjoyed helping with haying on the Darling farm next door for several summers.  Bob came out of retirement once again, to work for the College Association at Delhi, Inc. as a night cleaner.  He served as a member of the Andes Central School Board of Education and enjoyed singing in the choir at the Presbyterian Church of Andes over the years.  He was an elder and lifelong member of the Cabin Hill Presbyterian Church.   He also was a member of the Andes Senior Citizens group.

To know Bob was to know that he had a wonderfully dry sense of humor and he was a jokester.  He was handy with tools, as farmers have to be, and could fix just about anything.  He loved animals, spending time outdoors, cutting firewood and was an avid vegetable gardener.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Frances, his four children: William (Mary) Stevens, Donna (Barry Post) Briglia, Kristen (Skip) Baxter and Matthew (Jaimi) Stevens; grandchildren: Sarah (Dimitri) Dron, Adam Stevens, Daniel Stevens, Michael Briglia, Nathan Stevens, Hannah Baxter, Joshua Baxter, Alexander Stevens, Julia Baxter and Raegan Stevens; special cousins Fay Dodge and Richie “Dickie” Sanderson, as well as many other beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.   Bob was predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Elizabeth Stevens, his brother Douglas E. Stevens and sister-in-law Doris Little Stevens.

A graveside memorial service at the Andes Cemetery on Saturday, October 26, 2024 at 11 a.m. will honor Bob’s life.  All are welcome to attend the service and join the family for a reception at the Cabin Hill Presbyterian Church immediately following. The family asks that donations to Andes Emergency Squad or Helios Care be made in lieu of flowers.

The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the special caregivers who have helped care for Bob over the past year, Deanna, Donna and Alexis, and the Helios team for their support.
