Obituary of Lewis A. Coulter
Lewis A Coulter of Dexter, NY and formerly of Hamden and Meredith, NY, passed away on Monday, July 8, 2024, at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, NY.
He was born on June 27, 1940, in Walton, NY to Myron and Irene (Budine) Coulter. He was raised on the family farm in Hawley Station and attended the Hamden one room schoolhouse on Back River Road. He graduated from Walton Central School in 1958. Lew excelled in FFA and earned the Empire and American Farmer Degrees. He and his Dad, Myron, built the barn on Hamden Hill and he started his own herd of registered Holsteins at Corner Lane Farm.
On September 14, 1968, Lew married Joyce Brown in Mundale, NY and they ran the farm on Hamden Hill together for the next 10 years. In 1978, some health issues led the Coulter’s to move their family and herd of cattle to Scottsville, KY for 1 year. Returning to Delaware County they settled in Meredith on the Catskill Turnpike Road and continued to farm with their children until 1986 when the cows and farm were sold.
Lew enjoyed working as a heavy equipment operator for 20 years at Delaware County Highway. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, raising livestock, and spending time with family. Lew and Joyce moved to Dexter, NY in 2015 to be closer to their daughter and son-in-law.
Lew was active in the community having served: as a Trustee in the Hamden Presbyterian Church, Johnson Bowling Team, DHIA, Director of the Delaware County Holstein Club, served 7 years on the Town of Meredith Planning Board, and 4-H leader.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joyce (Brown); his 3 daughters, Chris (David) Osterhout; Holly Coulter; all of Dexter, NY; and Kerri (Steve) Wszolek of Byram Township, NJ. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Travis Bennett, Eric Osterhout, Stephen, Matthew and Kaitlyn Wszolek. He was predeceased by his son, Richard Coulter; daughter, Julie Coulter; brother Bruce Coulter; nephew Teddy Coulter; niece Jennie Benedict; and his parents Myron and Irene.
The family will hold a memorial service for Lew at Woodland Cemetery in Delhi, NY on July 20, 2024, at 12PM, and a Celebration of Life following at the Meridale Community Church at 1PM.
