Obituary of William Bivona

William “Bill” Bivona, 79, of Jefferson, NY, died peacefully in his home on May 3, 2024.

Bill was born on March 5, 1945 to Vincent and Josephine Bivona in Brooklyn, NY. Bill met the love of his life, Lorraine Behrman at Pete’s Deli in Uniondale, NY.  The two wed on July 4, 1965 and were married for the next 58 years.

Bill graduated from Nassau County Police Academy in 1967 and joined the Long Island State Parkway Police soon after.  He was a decorated law enforcement officer until his retirement from the force in 1985. Bill and family relocated from Long Island to Jefferson, NY the same year.  Bill’s “second act” included positions as a newspaper reporter, U.S. Mail letter carrier and maintenance worker at Mine Kill State Park.  Bill also served his community through his affiliation with Jefferson Methodist Church where he was a lay preacher.  He had a passion for men’s ministry, particularly the men’s monthly breakfast.

A long-time guitar player, Bill loved all forms of music.  His favorite artist was Johnny Cash though he enjoyed Country, 50’s and 60’s rock and even classical.  He was a model train enthusiast and auto racing fan. He founded the East Jefferson Speedway, a slot car racing club and enjoyed radio controlled racing cars as well.

Bill entered into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ in 1973 and trusted Him for his salvation.  His life verse was Matthew 11:28-30 which says “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. (NIV)

Bill was preceded in death by parents Vincent and Josephine Bivona and brothers Vincent Bivona and Andrew Bivona.

Bill is survived by his wife Lorraine of Jefferson, NY and children William Bivona Jr. (Christine) of Jefferson, NY; Robert Bivona (Jaqueline) of Schenectady, NY; Dwayne Bivona (Karen) of Wichita Falls, TX; Josie Pyenta (Paul) of Tuscola, TX and Andrew Bivona (Michele) of Jefferson NY.
