Obituary of Sandra "Sandy" Stevenson
Sandra “Sandy” Stevenson, 86, of Harpersfield, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, December 10, 2023 at Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville.
Born on October 29, 1937 in Penn Yan, NY, she was the daughter of the late Milford and Zola Smith.
After attending the one room schoolhouse at Jerusalem School #14 (where one of her classmates was the famous musician, Duane Eddy), she graduated from Penn Yan Academy. Sandy then attended Keuka College and obtained a bachelor's degree in Sociology in 1959. Upon graduation, she was recruited by the Delaware County Department of Social Services and worked as a social worker in the foster care program. Sandy stepped back from social work for several years to raise her family and be a full time mom. Later she went back to work as a preventive case worker for Delaware County DSS, as well as working as a day care provider and supervisor for Deer Run and the Hobart Learning Center. She also worked as a substitute postal worker for the Harpersfield Post Office.
Sandra was married to David L. Stevenson on May 15, 1966.
She had a passion and love for antiques, history, reading and poetry, even composing poems herself. She was a gifted pianist and singer, lending her talents in a variety of ways. Sandy was active in the Stamford United Methodist Church, Colonel Harper Grance, Girl Scouts and volunteering in many areas, including CORE Values Thrift Shop. Her defining characteristic was as a champion for people and animals, her contributions too numerous to mention.
She was predeceased by her mother and stepfather: Zola and Harold (Dinehart) Fox; and a brother: Bruce Lee Smith.
Besides her husband, David; Sandra is survived by her daughter: Heather (Joseph) Greene of East Meredith; sisters: Leola Gould of Penn Yan and Laurel Maslyn of Geneva; nephews: Brian (Diane) Shaffer, Jacob (Jeanette) Maslyn, Luke (Emily) Maslyn, Judd (Jennifer) Maslyn, Isaac (Kristen) Maslyn; and nieces: Terri (David Jansen) Shaffer and Kelly Shaffer; and their children.
Friends and relatives are invited to call on the family from 12-2PM on Thursday, December 14, 2023, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 15 Buntline Drive, Stamford, where a funeral service will be held at 2PM with the Rev. Dawn Richards. Burial will be in the spring at Harpersfield Cemetery.
