Obituary of Ruby M. Mostert
Ruby M. Mostert, 76, of Delhi, died peacefully on June 22, 2023, after a brief illness. She was born on May 16,1947 in Plattsburgh, NY, to the late William and Sylvia (Roushia) Maynard. After her parents divorced, Ruby was adopted by her mother’s second husband, the late Harold Merrihew. As a child, Ruby moved from the Plattsburgh area to Tampa, FL and then to Poughquag, NY, where Harold managed the Roosevelt farm. They eventually moved to Hartwick, NY, where they owned and operated the general store.
Ruby graduated from Cooperstown Central School in 1965. She then attended a legal secretarial course at the Utica School of Commerce. She married John Peter Mostert, of Delhi, on December 2, 1967. Ruby held multiple jobs throughout her life including: secretary, receptionist, drafting typist, billing clerk and various positions in food service. However, the job she enjoyed the most was that of homemaker and raising her children. Ruby also enjoyed gardening, quilting, collecting recipes, reading, watching wildlife, loving her various adopted cats and volunteering her time to speak to others about the Bible’s hope for the future. Ruby was an excellent writer and enjoyed sending beautiful letters to her many friends. She also authored a collection of poems. She had a kind and generous spirit.
Ruby had the opportunity to spend the past winter exploring many state and national parks of the southwest. She was awed by the natural beauty of the mountains and desert. After living in a wooded area for many years, she marveled at the wide-open skies that provided ample viewing of clouds, sunsets and stars. Prior to becoming ill, Ruby was planning on moving west permanently.
She is survived by her three children and their families: Shelley Carson, of North Las Vegas, NV, Michael (Crystal) Mostert of Delhi and Daniel (Soraya) Mostert of Oneonta; grandchildren: Joshua, Jonathan, Jonah, and Amira Mostert; her sister: Brenda Reed of Oswego; her sister-in-law: Sandy Merrihew of Oneonta; along with several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Ruby was predeceased by her husband, and her brother, Neal Merrihew.
Ruby was a member of the Oneonta Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
A memorial service will be held via Zoom at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Helios Care, 297 River Street Service Road, Suite #1, Oneonta, NY 13820. Ruby’s family is very grateful to the team who provided compassionate support to both Ruby and her family.
