Obituary of Barbara Laurine Peet

- Barbara Laurine Peet, 105 years, of Holiday, Florida, and frequent Delhi visitor over the past 50 years, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday night, November 29, 2020. Her long-awaited "Heavenly Chariot" has come for Barbara, at last. To God be the glory

The eldest of five children of Frederick M. and Mary Jane (Harvey) Parsons, Barbara was born January 15, 1915, in St. John's, Newfoundland.

An avid swimmer and fitness advocate, she swam across St. John’s Harbour when she was 11 years old, a remarkable feat for a child that age. Her enjoyment of saltwater swimming continued well into her 90's.

Barbara met Archibald T. Peet when they were both teenagers. They later married on March 24, 1936 in St. John's where they started their family. Eventually relocating to Long Island, NY in 1945 where they lived for over 30 years, the couple retired to Pasco County, Florida in 1976. A union of 47 years, 'Arch' died on March 25, 1983.

In later years, Barbara became an adventuring world traveler, journeying to Greece, Israel, Morocco, Egypt, Russia, India, the Great Wall of China, and climbed to the top of Machu Picchu in southern Peru. Always an independent woman, she maintained and drove her car until she was 100.

Attributing her longevity to remaining physically and mentally active all of her life, she regularly walked several miles daily to the age of 97. Keen of mind and spirit, she was an avid reader throughout her life. Devout in her life-long Anglican faith, she continued her daily Bible devotions up to her final days, which were exemplified by her volunteer work feeding the helpless and elderly in area nursing homes, and ardent charitable support of the plight of Native Americans, Disabled and Paralyzed Veterans, and works of The Salvation Army.

The matriarch of a large extended family, Barbara was proud of her 300-year Anglo-Newfoundland heritage, yet steadfast in her US citizenship and patriotism.

A 69-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron of St. Alban's (NY) Chapter, #806 (1961), she was also a communicant of St. Stephen's Church, New Port Richey, FL. Her 105th birthday, celebrated last January 15, was hosted in her home by HPH Hospice and included a feature article in 'Spectrum Bay News 9', Tampa, FL in which Barbara is quoted as saying "There should be another word coined for 'Thank you'. I'm so grateful for all of the blessings I've had in my life."

In addition to her husband, she was pre-deceased by two brothers, Richard and Andrew Parsons, two sisters, Ethel Burton and Betty Dawe, and two grandsons, Jonathan Peet and Richard Daggett.

Surviving are her daughter, Sylvia F. Hanrahan, Tarpon Springs, FL, her son, Robert A. Peet, Delhi; six grandchildren, Pamela Tarantola, Kenneth Daggett, Elizabeth Peet, Master Sergeant Jennifer Peet, US Army, Army Reserve,  Robyn Rawls and Allison Peet; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and large circle of friends.

The family will receive friends, 2 to 6 PM Sunday, December 6, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, 134 Main St, Delhi.

The Order for the Burial of the Dead and Requiem Celebration of the Holy Eucharist will be 11 AM Monday, December 7, at St. James' Church, Lake Delaware, Delhi. Final commendation and burial beside her husband in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, immediately following,

Per COVID 19 guidelines-masks and social distancing will be required at both the funeral home and church.

Contributions in her memory to The Salvation Army will be greatly appreciated.

"Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her."  Proverbs 31:28.
