Obituary of Rosemarie Hugues

Rosemarie Hugues, 78, of Brooklyn NY passed away suddenly at home on Tuesday, September 3rd in Oneonta, NY.

Rosemarie was born in Brooklyn, NY to Joseph and Mary Covello on November 24th, 1940. She graduated from Freeport high school in 1959. She married her high school sweetheart, Peter Hugues on February 7th, 1959. 

She was one of the first women ambulance drivers in the state of NY and President of the Central Islip Community Ambulance Auxiliary from 1972-1973. She was on the board of directors for the US Theater Players of the 1st United Methodist Church of Central Islip. She had a true passion for theater arts and was an active member of her community theater group. After the birth of her three daughters, she worked as a bus driver for many years for Hauppauge school district before moving upstate to open The Lucky Star Cafe with her husband, Sister and Brother-in-law in Bloomville, NY. She then worked for many years at Deer Run Ski Area in Stamford NY, and then retired from then, TYCO, in Hobart NY.  

She enjoyed crafting and creating unique gifts for family and friends, from knitting and crocheting beautiful clothing items to building intricate plastic canvas toys and dollhouse furniture for her grandchildren. In her free time she loved to solve complicated Sudoku puzzles and would complete whole books with ease. Also, she was always up for a good Law and Order marathon.

Rosemarie is preceded in death by her Mother, Mary Covello, Father, Joseph Covello and brother, Joseph Covello Jr. 

Rosemarie is survived by her loving husband Peter Hugues of 60 years.  They loved going to Bingo together and sharing in the wonderful life they had together.

Rosemarie always had a special place in her heart for her beloved dogs, Bubbles, Daisy, Rosie, and Lizzy.

Rosemarie is lovingly remembered by her children, Dolores Smith and her husband Stan; Jayme Hugues; Anna Melendez and her husband Andy.  Her wonderful grandchildren, who were the love and pride of her life, Adriane Matos; Andrew Melendez and wife Sarah, Peter Hugues-Simmons, Nic Van Buren, Joseph Simmons and Alyssa Melendez. 

The family will host a Celebration of her life at their family home on Tuesday, September 10th at 1:00 pm.
