Obituary of Robert P. McElroy
Robert P. McElroy, 76, of Jefferson, passed away at his home on Saturday, August 31, 2019.
Born on May 14, 1943 in Queens, NY, Robert was the son of the late Robert and Kathleen (Hurley) McElroy.
Mr. McElroy was a proud veteran of the US Army, serving during the Vietnam War and then again serving a second tour during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Robert retired from Audio Sears in Stamford as a Machinist, prior he worked for Catskill Craftsman in Stamford.
He was a Ham radio operator using the call sign KB2FIO.
Robert was an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, long range target shooting and camping. Affectionately known as “Chief Burning Log” for is great ability to build a campfire. He also loved fireworks and was known as a practical joker, always ready to enjoy a good laugh. Robert’s greatest joy was his family, which he enjoyed spending time with. Robert also enjoyed spending time with his K-9 companion: Lady.
He is survived by his wife: Florence McElroy of Jefferson; children: Robert and Brian McElroy both of Long Island, Dawn Goodridge of Gilboa and Sherry Ann McElroy of Jefferson; grandchildren: Jessica, Trena, Kaleb, Hannah, Ayden, Megan and Kerri; great-grandchildren: Noelle and Adalia; and one “Rent-a-kid”.
A memorial service, celebration of life with full military honors will be held at 1PM on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the Catskill Veterans Outreach Center, 52 Main Street, Stamford, NY with the Rev. Dottie Morris officiating.
