Obituary of Julian Hager

December 20, 1930 Sherman  Julian Hager’s life began on a farm in  Gilboa, NY to Maurice G. Hager and Kathryn L. (Williams) Hager and ended on his farm in Kortright Center, NY – July 26, 2019.  Julian grew up in the Schoharie valley with his older brother M. George Hager. He married Iris D. (Paddock) Hager on January 18, 1952. After the birth of their first child, Holly L. (Hager) Thurston, Julian served in the U.S. Army in the 101st Airborne Division in Germany from 1953-1957. After his service in 1958, Julian and Iris purchased their first dairy farm in Kortirght Center, and then awaited the birth of their next child, Harry S. Hager. Henry L. Hager was next to arrive in the family. They resided at the original farmstead till 1970 when Julian purchased the existing site of Hager Farms, LLC only one mile up the road on County Highway 33, Bloomville, NY. Here is where his legacy continues.  Julian was content to have his children marry, and then have grandchildren. In 1996, Iris passed leaving him alone for only a short period of time, as on October 16th, 1997 Julian married Doris (Sackett)Scully. Together they have 16 children and spouses, 18 grand children and 21 great grandchildren. This blended family is: Holly (Hager) and James Thurston of Richmond, Va. Harry and Linda (Rode) Hager of Bloomville. Henry and Ellen (Foote)Hager of Bloomville. Denise (Scully) and Kevin Dorosky, South Kortright. Debi (Scully) and Jon Ballard, Stamford. Donnie and Penny (Clark) Scully, South Kortight. Donna (Scully) and Ken Muthig, Hobart. Dianne (Scully) and John Drake, Bloomville.

Julian enjoyed the company of his nieces and nephews. It was, however, his grandchildren and great grandchildren that brought many years of joy to him. In his later years of farming, his primary task was to tend all the miles of electric fence that keeps the dairy cows and heifers in their pastures. He always had a fence tester and a pair of glasses with him at all times. What fun he had teaching his great grandsons to drive his gator around the farm.

Please join the family for a celebration of life on August 4, 2019 with a service beginning at 2 pm at the farmstead: 8400 County Highway 33, Bloomville, NY.  Following the service, please join the family with a dish to pass picnic for fellowship and memories.

In Lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, or purchase whole milk products to  support our dairy industry.

The family would like to thank MacArther Funeral Home, Delhi, NY and Hans Funeral Home, Albany, NY for making the final arrangements.
