Obituary of Richard E. Wickham

Richard E. (Dick) Wickham, 87, of Delhi, passed away March 6th, peacefully at home.  He was born May 8, 1931, to Arley and Sara Bolles Wickham in Delhi, NY.

He attended Delaware Academy and graduated from Abraham Kellogg Central School in Treadwell in 1949. 

Dick joined the Army in 1949 and after basic training in Fort Dix, NJ, was sent to Fort Belvoir, VA to attend engineering school.  He was sent to Korea in June 1950 and was honorably discharged later that year.

He then worked at Bendix in Sidney, NY until he joined his father in the family automotive and fuel oil business in 1953.   After his father’s death, he became president of Wickham Sales and Service, selling Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Ford vehicles.   He retired in 2006 after 53 years in business.

Dick met the love of his life, Marilyn Stoutenburg of Oneonta, and they were married in 1952, celebrating 66 years at the time of his death.  They enjoyed working together at Wickham Sales and Service, traveling, antiquing and the company of their many faithful dogs.

Richard served for 6 years on the Delhi Village Board as trustee and was Commander of the Delhi American Legion Post 190.  He served for 18 years on the SUNY Delhi College Council after appointment by Governor Hugh Carey.  He also served many years on the SUNY Delhi Foundation and automotive council.

He was a 60 year member of the First Presbyterian Church of Delhi, having served as trustee, deacon and elder.

He was predeceased by his parents and brother Robert.  He is survived by his loving wife Marilyn and several nieces and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 2PM on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at the First Presbyterian Church, Clinton Street, Delhi with the Rev. Dr. Lisa Ruth Mays officiating. Friends and relatives are invited to call on the family from 1-2PM at the church, prior to the funeral. Private burial with full military honors will be held at Woodland Cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Delhi or O’Connor Hospital.
