Obituary of Arthur Henry Van Buren

Arthur Henry “Hank” Van Buren, 82, of Hobart, passed away peacefully at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

Born on June 4, 1936 in Hobart, Hank was the son of the late Arthur H. and Elizabeth (Coleman)           Van Buren.

Hank was a 1956 graduate of South Kortright Central School.  He proudly served in the United States Navy Reserves from 1956-1964 and was activated from 1957-58. He helped his father and Uncle Bill manage E.T. Van Buren & Sons the feed and coal business in Hobart.  Hank also owned and operated the Ben Franklin Store in Stamford as well as the Catskill Mountain Variety Store in Margaretville.

Hank was committed to the community, where he was a member of the Hobart Fire Department, Hobart Rotary Club, former St. Andrew’s Lodge #289 F&AM, Troy Elks Club, West Branch Rod and Gun Club, Stamford American Legion, VFW and the Hobart United Methodist Church.

Besides his parents, Hank was predeceased by his brothers: Paul and James; and the mother of his children: Patricia.

He is survived by his children: David (Virpi) Van Buren, Elizabeth (Jefferson) Sharpe, Andrew (Ruthanne) Van Buren, Melissa (Kevin) Moran and Matthew Van Buren; ten grandchildren; cousins: Betty Bergleitner and Edith Doyal; lifelong friend: Kenneth Brockway; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 11AM on Friday, October 19, 2018 at the Hobart United Methodist Church, Hobart with the Rev. Dee Stevens and Rev. Dottie Morris. Burial will follow at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Contributions in memory of Hank may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Hobart Fire Dept.
