Obituary of Betty H. Oles

DELHI Betty H. Oles, 91, of Delhi, passed away on Friday, October 4, 2013 at O'Connor Hospital in Delhi. Betty was born in Downsville on April 15, 1922, the daughter of Raymond and Addie (Lindsay) Horton and was raised on their family farm. She was Valedictorian of the first graduating class of Downsville Central School. She earned her degree in education from SUNY Oneonta and began her teaching career in Downsville. In 1957, she began teaching at Delaware Academy where she spent most of her career enriching the lives of her 6th grade students. She retired from that position in 1976. She met Wilbur S. Oles, Jr. at 4-H Camp Shankitunk in 1943. They were married on October 26, 1946. Bill and Betty settled in Delhi where they raised their four children. This month, they would have celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. Betty had a passion for reading, playing golf, listening to music, and enjoying the company of family and friends. She always embraced lifelong learning while sharing her great sense of humor and contagious smile. She never missed a chance to meet a new friend and never forgot a birthday or anniversary. She was a Matron of the Delhi Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Betty was a charter member of the women's golf league and loved every opportunity to be on the golf course with friends. Betty was a member of the United Ministry Church of Delhi. She truly enjoyed being an active part of her community. Betty is survived by her husband and their four children: Nancy Sweet (Dale) of Concord, NC, Margaret Baldwin of Delhi, Wilbur S. Oles, 3d (Diane) of Delhi, and Stephen Oles (Lynn) of Delhi. She was also blessed with 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. At Betty's request, there will be no calling hours or funeral service.
