Obituary of Eugene F. Govern
Eugene F. Govern, III, 64, of Stamford passed away Saturday afternoon, February 13, 2016 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown following a short but courageous battle with colon cancer.
Gene or Geno as he was affectionately known as by family and friends, was born on May 16, 1951 in Stamford. He was the son of the late Eugene F. and Eleanor (Brandon) Govern, Jr.
He graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College with a Bachelor's of Science degree. Gene has worked for SYSCO as a marketing associate for the past several years.
Gene kept up on current events, politics and enjoyed studying history and genealogy.
Gene was a sports enthusiast; he especially enjoyed basketball, football and was an avid lifelong golfer, winning the 1982 Stamford Invitational Championship. He loved to travel and enjoyed trips to Saratoga to watch the horses.
Gene was a social person and could often be found spending time with his friends and family, whether it be out sharing a meal or on the golf course. Above all else he loved his children and family; he shared a special bond with his mother and was a devoted son and proud father.
He is survived by two children: Eugene F. "Gov" Govern, IV of Lake Placid and Jamie Lynn (Ben Bascomb) Govern of Richfield Springs; sisters: Jane M. Govern of Kansas City, KS, Joyce G. (Schuyler) Pindar of Stamford and her children, Sky and Jenn, and Jolene G. (Max) Young of Denver, CO and her children, Kristy, Robyn and Alex Wilfley; one uncle: James Govern of Stamford; one aunt: Marion Govern of Stamford; his loving friend and mother of his children: Barbara Jean Govern of Stamford; his closest friends: JB, Petey, Vinny, Doc & Tim; and the many cousins, friends, and co-workers whose lives he touched over the years
Besides his parents, Gene was predeceased by a brother: John B. Govern.
Friends and relatives are invited to call on the family from 4PM-7PM on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016 at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 40 Cornell Ave., Hobart. A Mass will be held at 2PM on Thursday, Feb 18, at Sacred Heart Church, Stamford.
