Condolences
Although it's been about 25 years since I last saw or talked to Gene, I wept last night when I heard of his passing, and regret waiting too long to reconnect. We were good friends for only a short span in our lives but it was a memorable time for me. In our high school and college years we learned a lot about the game of golf together and had many good times, good laughs and a camaraderie on the golf course that I'll never forget. Off the course, I'll always remember the summer of '71 when Gene and I worked together on a labor union construction job at SUNY Oneonta. We really didn't like that kind of work but had many funny stories about our experiences on that job, and every week looked forward to the weekend where we would reconvene on the golf course. Gene was always upbeat, could talk about anything and was just a pleasure to be around. He will be sorely missed and to his family and his closest friends, my deepest sympathies and condolences.

Growing up with the late James Govern Jr. I learned of his admiration of Gene and getting to know Gene later, I learned to understand where both Jimmy's and my entire family's, immediate and extended, admiration and comraderie came from. I'm sorry to have missed the services. On behalf of my family, those with Gene, and those still here, God bless you Gene and your family and friends that mourn your passing.

This memory is for two people. First, Geno and more importantly at this time, Joyce. I know Geno will recall what we often referred to as the summer of 1970 something. I say something, because we could never recall the exact year. It's an age thing. We began the summer playing golf and ended the summer playing golf. A big surprise. I'd like to take a bit of credit for Geno's playing the game, certainly not his success, just his love of the game. We played more golf that summer than was humanly possible. We terrorized (in a good way) every golf course within 50 miles of Stamford. We played every tournament possible including the Invitational and the Delaware Amateur Tournament in Delhi. We never stopped. And, we had a blast, didn't we Geno. We had more fun than is humanly possible. We also hit a couple of county fairs and learned the art of cornfield running. I'll let Geno explain that one...too funny. Since that time, I didn't see Geno that often, usually only once or twice a year at the Member Guest or the Invitational. Geno always reminded me of that summer like as if he really needed to. We'd just look at each other and laugh. That summer was a lifetime of memories for us and I'm sure Geno is laughing right now. Geno was a great friend and those laughs will be forever missed.
Joyce, Geno was a greater brother than he was a friend. I know that you, Jolene and Jane will miss him dearly. I want to offer my sympathies to you and your families. I hope you get a little amusement from the "summer of 70 something" to lighten your burden a bit. A soul lost far too soon, but in a better place now. I know there is really nothing I can say to ease your pain. Highlighting the good times are the only way I can deal with the loss and remember Geno. May God bless and watch over you in this time of need.
My Sympathies,

Dear Friends - We go back a long way knowing Geno. We shared many laughs along the way. Even from a distance, we knew it was him when we saw his "bouncy walk". There were ups and downs, but he always said hello and asked about the family. We're in Florida for a while so won't be there for the services, but wanted to let you know you were in our thoughts.
Sincerely,
Leon & Evie Johns

Gene was one of the first people I met upon returning to the U.S in 1992. He was kind and full of humor. I will never forget that encounter or the friendly smiles and greetings into the future. My deepest sympathies to the entire family; I know everyone in my family is also saddened by your loss. The warmth and sparkle in him is carried on in his children - that is a wonderful legacy and tribute to this remarkable person.
