Obituary of Joan Ann Ball

Joan Ann Ball passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Meridale, NY on Sunday, January 7, 2018.

Joan was born in Glenbrook, CT (a suburb of Stamford, CT) and was the daughter of late Mary and Joseph Hammershoy.

She attended Stamford High School (Stamford, CT) where she was state junior’s doubles champion with her sister Shirley in the sport of badminton.  Joan Attended Bryant College on an academic scholarship and was a member of the Glee Club.

While at Bryant, Joan met the love of her life, John Ball.  The couple married and moved to Norwich, NY and then to New Berlin, where she was Postmaster for several years and then Secretary at the High School. Joan moved to Meridale in 1972 and worked as a Secretary at SUNY Delhi until her retirement.

Joan Traveled extensively in her retirement, including trips to Denmark with her grandchildren and a cruise around the British Isles and channel ports on the Queen Elizabeth II.

Mrs. Ball was active in her community and was a member of the Meridale Women’s Club, Ladies Aid and the American Red Cross.   Joan also served on the Meredith Town Council for several terms of office.

She is survived by her children: John Ball, Jr., James Ball and Marybeth Williams; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews.

Besides her parents, Joan was predeceased by her husband: John Ball; sisters: Muriel and Shirley; and a brother Jay, who was lost at sea as a Midshipman at the US Merchant Marine Academy during WWII.

A memorial service will be held at 2PM on Sunday, October 7th, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church, 2 Cross Street, Delhi with the Rev. Dr. Lisa Ruth Mays officiating.
