Obituary of Isabelle Freer

DELHI - Isabelle Freer passed away at her home on Sunday, January 27, 2013 surrounded by her loving family. Isabelle was born on November 22, 1926 in Swan Lake, N.Y. the daughter of Eva and Leslie Sherwood. She graduated from Liberty High School and the Spencer Business School in Kingston, NY. Isabelle married George H. Freer, Jr. on September 6, 1947, and raised 4 children. She encouraged her children's interests and attended their concerts, school programs and sports events. Isabelle hosted a lifetime of family dinners and was known among her extended family for her specialty dishes, desserts, jams and pickles. Building and maintaining relationships with friends and family was most important to Isabelle as evidenced by the large numbers of people she stayed in touch with over the years. As much as Isabelle loved her family she also enjoyed her work as a secretary. She started her career working for the O.F.C. Company in New York City, was the Principal's Secretary at the Liberty High School and later worked for the Dean at Clark University, in Worcester, Massachusetts. For 21 years Isabelle worked in support of the Case Workers at the Delaware County Department of Social Services. She retired from the Delaware Regional Center in Walton. No matter where she worked, Isabelle was valued for her organizational skills, high quality work and dedication to a job well done. Isabelle was a member of the 'Greatest Generation". She was a true patriot, who was dedicated to the support of our troops, their families and all service veterans. She was the Past President of the Donald W. Gleason American Legion Auxiliary. She was the past Secretary and Chaplin for the Delaware County of the American Legion Auxiliary. Isabelle was an active member of the United Ministry of Delhi church. She was a former member of the Wautagua Chapter Order of the Eastern Star and the Delhi Improvement Society. Isabelle is survived by her sisters, Emmagene Travis of Liberty, New York and Jennie Nolan of Deerfield Beach, Florida, as well as her children, Susan Freer-Gladding, George Freer and (Carole Keller), Martha and (Bill) Sunkenberg, John and( Linda) Freer: grandchildren, Brock Freer, Brian Gladding, Megan Freer, Allison Freer, great grandchildren; Sarah and Brian Gladding, and many nieces and nephews. Friends and family may call from 2 to 4 pm or 6 to 8 pm, Friday, February 8, 2013 at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 131 Main Street in Delhi. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 11 am at the United Ministry Church of Delhi.
