Obituary of Floyd Stanley Eighmey

DELHI Floyd Stanley Eighmey, 80, of Delhi, passed away Thursday, February 6, 2014 at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown. He was born on August 7, 1933 in Andes, the son of Philip and Mildred Eighmey. He married Doris Havens on June 24, 1953 at the Holy Family Church in Downsville. Floyd was a wonderful family man. He was married to his wife, Doris, for 60 years and they had five children. He loved to be the griller at the numerous family picnic gatherings, made children and grandchildren cinnamon tea rings every Christmas, and was always there with a helping hand no matter the need. His family was his pride and joy. Floyd loved to watch sports, fish and work on small machines in his home shop. He had a great time doing pig roasts for people using his homemade roaster. He and his wife were avid square dancers. He was a great storyteller who had many stories to tell of his and others' experiences over his 80 years. He would always have a smile on his face or give a chuckle during the telling. Floyd was a hard worker his whole life and took great pride in supporting his family. He began his career as a milk truck driver with Don Bramley Trucking in 1948. He then went to work for Matthew Brothers, followed by Delwood's and ended his career with Riddell Brothers. His farm families meant a great deal to him and he loved talking to them. Floyd was a crossing guard for Delaware Academy for the last years of his life. He cared very much about the children he saw every day and their safety. Floyd knew many people in Delhi and many knew him. He was a great friend who would do anything for anyone. He gathered at McDonald's and other places around Delhi almost every day to chat and share stories. He was known as the "mayor" of Delhi. He would not think of living anywhere else. He will be truly missed by all. He was a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church and the Teamsters Union. Floyd is survived by his wife, Doris Eighmey of Delhi; a daughter Melody Eldred of Oneonta; son, Randy and Kim Eighmey of Delhi; daughter, Valorie and Jack Reed of Hamden; daughter, Sandra Hitchcock of Oneonta; son, Floyd Eighmey of Delhi; 19 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
