Obituary of Helen Ethel Sander

Delhi Helen Ethel Sander, 84 of Delhi passed away on April 7, 2014 after an extended illness. Mom was born December 22, 1929 in Hobart the daughter of the late Lorenzo Whispell and Flower Dart Whispell. Mom married Albert Knapp and was blessed with four children; Richard Knapp, Donald Knapp, Albert Knapp (Patricia), and Lori Knapp (Roger Winne). He predeceased her on September 21, 1962. Mom met and married Wilhelm Sander Jr. on November 7, 1964 and was blessed with two daughters, Marie (Dominick) Sebastian and Bethany Sander (Michael Sisson). Mom is survived by her Husband of 50 years, her children, and her sister Ramona Currie; brothers, Larry Graham (JoAnn), Clayton James Graham; brother-in-law Henry Sander (Freda), sister-in-law Frieda Snyder (Frank), and sister-in-law Irene Sander. Mom is also survived by her five granddaughters, Krystle Knapp (Chris Miller), Danielle Franco (Rob Glynn), Meaghan Sebastian (Dave Scully), Marcy Sebastian (Josh Sutton), Nikki Sebastian, Michaela Sisson; a great grandson, Demetri Diesel Miller and many nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her sisters, Dorothy Schmidt, Violet O'Dell, Ella Effner, and brother Harry Whispell Sr. and brother-in-law Donald Sander. Living on the "farm" Mom fell in love with the West Kortright Church and it became her passion to see it restored. She enlisted the help of her girls to mow the lawn and cut the weeds and so it all began and with the help of her very dear friend Richard Kathmann the West Kortright Center was brought back to life. Mom was also an avid photographer and was well known for her photos. She has about 100 photo albums of her family and friends. Mom was a member and Elder of the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church and a past member of the Town of Kortright Planning Board. A Celebration of Mom's Life will be May 3, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the West Kortright Center, Church Road, East Meredith, NY. Calling hours will be held this Saturday, April 12, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, NY. Memorial contributions in Mom's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church, or Catskill Area Hospice.
