Obituary of Wanita W. Lewis
Wanita W. Lewis, aged 102, of the A. O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, N.Y., formerly of Delhi, N.Y., died on February 10, 2017.
She was born on August 27, 1914 in Trout Creek, N.Y., the daughter of Clair L. and Mildred (Drake) Whitaker. She was married on September 13, 1933 in Delhi to Donald H. Lewis who died on June 25, 2005.
She was a 1930 graduate of Delaware Academy, Delhi and of New York State University College at Delhi in 1971. She was employed for 11 years in the Delaware County Clerk's Office as Motor Vehicle Clerk, and 8 years in the County Treasurer's Office as Chief Account Clerk and Deputy County Treasurer. She was appointed interim County Treasurer by Governor Nelson Rockefeller in 1971. In 1973 she was elected Supervisor for the Town of Delhi, the first woman to hold that job. She held that office until her retirement in 1977.
She was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church of Delhi, now the United Ministry. A member and Past Matron of Watauga Chapter #315. O.E.S., Delhi and Willow Mac #304, O.E.S., Walton; Past District Deputy Grand Matron, O.E.S State of New York; a member of the D.A.R. Cooperstown; a member of American Legion Auxiliary, Donald Gleason Post #190, Delhi; a charter member of the Delhi College Golf Course. She had been a member of the Delhi Village Improvement Society, the Delhi Tourist Club, the Delaware County Association for Retarded Children, and the Delaware County Historical Society.
She is survived by one son, Stephen R. Lewis of DeLancey, one daughter, Mrs. David (Claire) Litsey of Snowshoe, W.Va., one sister Mrs. Mildred Lehman of Oneonta, one grandson, William P. Goodnough and his wife Lisa of Hagerstown, Md., two great granddaughters, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one son, John E. Lewis.
A memorial service will be held at 11AM on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at the United Ministry of Delhi.
