Herman More

Obituary of Herman A. More

Herman A. More, a lifelong resident of DeLancey, died Sunday, August 16, 2015, in the comfort of his own home. He was 82. Born July 18, 1933, in Delhi, he was the son of H. Adelbert and Harriett Ruoff More. He was a 1951 graduate of Delaware Academy, and attended Delhi College. He married Arlene Storey on April 4, 1953, in Delhi. She predeceased him on October 1, 2010, after more than 57 years together. Known to friends and associates as "Moose", Herman was a dairy farmer for most of his adult life. He also hauled milk for farmers to the Middletown Milk and Cream Companies in both Fraser and Walton. In his early adult years he hauled cauliflower to New York City and also did work when the Cannonsville and Pepacton Reservoirs were being constructed. In 1985 he was elected to the first of ten consecutive terms as Highway Superintendent for the town of Hamden. He enjoyed working for the public and enjoyed the men who worked with him in the highway department. He looked forward to the regular meetings of the Highway Superintendents' Association and the annual training school in Ithaca. In earlier years he was a bowler and participated in leagues in both Delhi and Walton. He was an active member of the Royale Oasis, and enjoyed spending time and fellowship with his fellow members. For more than 40 years he served as gravedigger at the Hamden Cemetery, digging the graves by hand. He was often called in to dig graves at other cemeteries. He served as President of the Hamden Cemetery Association for a number of years, and was a director of the Association at the time of his passing. Herman was happiest when he was outside. He loved his tractors and his field work, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He looked forward to welcoming friends and fellow hunters to his home during deer season, and enjoyed many fishing trips with his wife, his parents and his family, traveling to Maine and Canada. Moose had a gift of turning apples and raisins and sugar into a potent home brew. "Moose Juice" was known and loved throughout several states, and has been passed to his grandson, that the tradition may continue. Surviving are his children, Bert More, Jolene Harvey, Janice Miller and Jacqueline Hobbie; his sons-in-law, William Harvey, Dennis Miller and Benjamin Hobbie; his grandchildren, Jenniffer, Christopher, Rebecca, Holly, Matthew, Dennis and Nicholas; his great-grandchildren, Kellen, Raina, Owen and Brennen; his cousins, Ron More, Harriet Showers Caton, Karl Ruoff, Marie Ruoff, his wife's bothers and sisters and their families, and a wealth of friends and neighbors. He also leaves his three best buddies, Charlie, Edd and Ross. Friends may call today, Monday, August 24, 2015, from 1-4 at the family home in DeLancey. Services will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Hamden Covered Bridge with Rev. Sarah Hooker officiating. Casual dress is suggested.
