Obituary of Robert H. Lewis

Robert H. Lewis, Jr., 88, of Delhi, passed away on Sunday afternoon, March 6, 2016 at O'Connor Hospital in Delhi, surrounded by his family. Born on August 25, 1927 in Delhi, he was the son of the late Robert H. and Mable (Reynolds) Lewis. Bob grew up on the family farm in East Delhi, where he enjoyed working with horses. He was a graduate of Delaware Academy, where he was a three sport athlete, holding the school record in the 100 yard dash for many years. Interestingly enough, even as a student at DA he also served as a part time school bus driver. He was also a talented musician, playing the cornet and later the baritone, performing with several bands in the area including the Delhi Fireman's Band. Mr. Lewis proudly served overseas in the US Army shortly after WWII during the occupation of Japan. He was married to Barbara "Bobby" Bush Lewis, the couple enjoyed 48 years of marriage until her passing on March 27, 2000. Bob joined his father Robert and brother Donald in the operation of RH Lewis and Son, a local General Motors dealership, which he operated until his retirement, offering GMC, Buick and later Chevrolet brand cars and trucks at their Delhi location. Mr. Lewis was an avid golfer and was a member at the College Golf Course in Delhi. He was a past member of the Delhi Fire Dept., a member Delhi Lodge #439 F&AM and for several years he was a member of the Woodland Cemetery Association and the Board of Directors at O'Connor Hospital. Bob was also an active member of The United Ministry of Delhi, where he served as a trustee and on several committees, transferring his membership from the former 2nd Presbyterian Church. Besides his wife, Bobby, He was predeceased by his grandson: Zachery Lewis; brothers: Donald and Richard Lewis; and a sister: Jean Austin. He is survived by his children: Scott (Mary Pat) Lewis of Delhi, Jim(Kathryn) Lewis of Worcester, Sally(Steve) Murphy of Hartford and Cindy (Jody) Pinney of Franklin; grandchildren: Nate, Matt, Spenser, Patrick, Ammon, Kara, Patrick, Erin, Megan, Andrea and Joe; great-grandchildren: Kaylee, Jaden and Kellan; sister-in-law: Wanita Lewis of Oneonta; special friend: Shirley Munoz of Delhi; several nieces, nephews and cousins. The Lewis family would like to extend a special heart felt thank you to: Leona DuMond, Qiana Gregg, Kristi Moore, Ethel Stargill, the Doctors, Nurses and Staff at O'Connor Hospital and Catskill Area Hospice who took such special care of Bob during his illness over the past year. A funeral service will be held at 11AM on Friday, March 11 at the United Ministry of Delhi, Church Street, Delhi with the Rev. Dr. Duane Buddle officiating. Burial will take place at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi. Arrangements are with MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.
