Obituary of Helen Christine Sperry McMullen
Helen Christine Sperry McMullen, 93, formerly of Davenport, passed away on Thursday evening, April 27, 2017 at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.
Born on December 21, 1923 near Davenport, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Aimee (Bourne) Sperry.
Helen was a graduate of Worcester Central School where she met her husband Thomas. The couple was married on February 12, 1944. She trained as a Baby Nurse at Albany Infant Home. She and Thomas bought a dairy farm in Davenport and ran it for over 40 years.
Mrs. McMullen was a hard working farm wife, known for her pies and numerous beautiful quilts. She also had a small business known as Helen's House Plants, she also had beautiful vegetable and flower gardens.
Helen was a 81 year member of the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church in Davenport, where she sang in the Choir for over 50 years. She also volunteered at AO Fox Hospital in Oneonta for over 25 years.
She was predeceased her beloved husband Thomas, a union that lasted 68 years until his passing in 2012, also a brother: Walter Sperry; grandson: Matthew McMullen; and a son-in-law: Rev. George Rynick.
Helen is survived by her children: Carleen Rynick, Timothy (Maureen) McMullen, Thomas Daniel (Rita) McMullen and Christine McMullen; grandchildren: Julia Thomas, Heather Bryla, Michelle VonSutphen, Christopher McMullen, Andrew MacLaury, Jared Burger, Thomas McMullen, Emily Beuk and Brendan O'Brien; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends and relatives are invited to call on the family from 5-7PM on Friday, May 5, 2017 at the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church, St. Hwy 23, Davenport. A funeral service will be held at 11AM on Saturday, May 6, at the church, where friends and relatives are also invited to call on the family one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Davenport Cemetery.
Contributions in memory of Helen may be made to Catskill Area Hospice or Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Chruch.
