Obituary of Edythe M. Sparkes
Edythe M. "Edie" M. Sparkes, 91, of Stamford, passed away on Monday, April 10, 2017 at AO Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, after a brief Illness.
Born on December 5, 1925 in Jefferson, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Amy Mae (Cummings) Hamm.
Mrs. Sparkes was married to Clayton Sparkes of Corner Brook, New Foundland on January 8, 1946. Clayton passed away on May 5, 2003.
Edythe had the great opportunity to have her older sister as one of her teachers, and graduated from Jefferson Central School.
Along with being a wonderful wife and mother, Edythe worked in many places in the Stamford area; The Stamford Victory Market, Golden Acres, The Red Carpet, and also, Robinson Terrace. However, most people will remember her as the co-owner of the Griddle Inn, Clayton and Edythe owned and operated it for many years. Her short order cooking was phenomenal, many people still remember her famous banana cream pie, macaroni and potato salads.
Edythe was a friend to all, she enjoyed life with family and friends, shopping, going for a drive, she was up for it. She was always ready to take a trip to the ball field or the basketball gym, to watch her grandsons play. Edythe was a sun worshiper, she enjoyed basking in the rays and working on her tan.
She was a member of the Women's VFW in Stamford and the Stamford Fire Department Auxiliary. One of her greatest joys was being a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Hobart. Her love of the Lord shone every day.
Edythe was pre-deceased by fiver brother and sisters: Hilton and Kenneth Hamm, Lilliam Hamm, Glayds Yoemans, Luella Shafer; and a grandson: Jason K. Sparkes.
She is survived by her sons: David C. Sparkes of Garlick, NV, Darryl and Katherine Sparkes of Stamford; grandsons: Dana Sparkes of Reno, NV, Joshua and Brianna (Marshall) Sparkes of East Meredith and Cory and Marsh (Nissen) Sparkes of Stamford; great-grandchildren: Sierra Sparkes of Reno, NV, Brayden R. Sparkes of Stamford and Paisley S. Sparkes of East Meredith; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
A celebration of Edythe's life will be held at 11AM on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Hobart.
In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Edythe may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
