Son of the late Horace Albaugh, Sr. and Myrtis (Solt) Albaugh, Nick is survived by his wife of 54 years, Leslie (Floster) Albaugh; his daughters, Dallas Albaugh of Sunnyside, NY, Jennifer (Albaugh) Picher of Wappingers Falls, NY, Alexis Albaugh of Redwood City, CA, and Renee Albaugh of Hamden, NY; and his grandchildren, Delilah Picher of Wappingers Falls, NY, and Lukas and Natalie Sorm of Sunnyside, NY. Nick was a loving and devoted husband and father, proud grandfather, and loyal friend. Nick was born and raised in Frederick, Maryland. He received a BA from Michigan State University, where he cultivated an enduring affection for Greek and Latin Classical literature and history. He subsequently studied the Classics at Columbia and John Hopkins Universities. While at Michigan State, Nick met Leslie. After living in New York City for 8 years, Nick and Leslie bought a turn of the century farmhouse in Hamden, NY, where they raised their four daughters. Nick was employed by the New York State Department of Corrections, and retired in 2003 as Superintendent of Cape Vincent Correctional Facility. Nick was a passionate defender civil rights and the environment. He spent countless hours advocating for issues important to him, including protesting against hydrofracking through writing, creating powerful art, and keeping weekly vigils with local friends and activists. He had many hobbies included painting, writing fiction, and working on his farmhouse in Hamden. A longtime admirer of German Shepherd dogs, Nick spent many hours training with 7-year old Frieda in guard dog and retrieval skills. Nick loved the arts, particularly classical music and opera. For over 35 years, he attended summer performances at the Glimmerglass Opera. His family will hold a memorial and celebration of Nick's life at the Hamden farm in Spring, 2017. Memorial donations can be made to the Glimmerglass Opera and to the Franklin Stage Company.
