Obituary of Robert C. Sargent

DELHI A graveside service with military honors for Robert C. Sargent Sr., 88, of Irish Hill, Delhi, who passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011, will take place on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi. Arrangements are by the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi. DELHI Robert C. Sargent Sr., 88, of Irish Hill, Delhi, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi, following a lengthy illness. He was born Feb. 28, 1923, at home in the Town of Meredith, the son of Tracey and Edith (Craig) Sargent. Robert married his first wife, Helen Parker in Emmons, she predeceased him. He married Barbara Neighbors on April 2, 1947, in Oneonta. A United States Army veteran, he served from March 1943 to December 1945. For 14 years he worked at C.W. Hills in Delhi and retired after 21 1/2 years at SUNY Delhi as head of maintenance. He always enjoyed mowing lawns in the neighborhood. Robert was a member of American Legion Post 190; Bloomville Fire Department and East Meredith Fire Department. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara; daughters, Carol (Howard) Fessenden, Laurens, Cora Mueller and her companion, Robert Hailston, Kortright, Mary Ann (Leon) Merrill, Hamden, and Roberta Chambers, Davenport; a son, Robert Jr. of Delhi; cousins, Rona Sargent, Binghamton and Harold Sargent, Florida; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He also leaves his beloved friend, Buddy. He was predeceased by his parents; brother; two sons-in-law; and a grandson. Graveside services with military honors will be celebrated at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.
