Obituary of Celin V. Schoen
Celin V. Schoen, 85, of Hobart, passed away peacefully, early Friday morning, November 4, 2016 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, following a long illness.
Born on July 24, 1931, in New York City, the daughter of the late John and Dorothy (Chenowyth) Vaernewyck.
Celin was married to Frederick Schoen on January 3, 1955, a union that lasted nearly 55years until his passing on October 23, 2010.
Mrs. Schoen was a graduate of Hartwick College and received a master degree in Journalism from Boston University. She worked for the American Red Cross and was the Director of Operations for the Delaware County Chapter until her retirement. Celin was also a columnist and wrote for several local newspapers, including the Oneonta Daily Star, Walton Reporter and the Mountain Eagle News.
Celin enjoyed gardening, cooking international foods and valued education and history, she taught French and was an active member of the Hobart Historical Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was artistic, enjoyed acting and was instrumental in the organization of the Hartwick College Drama Club. Celin was a charter member of the Inner Wheel of Stamford & Hobart and the Hobart Rotary Club, and was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hobart and the United Methodist Women's group at the church.
Besides her husband, Fred, Mrs. Schoen was predeceased a son: Robert W. Schoen; and a brother: E. Vaernewyck.
She is survived by one child: Roger Schoen of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren: Erica Acord of Augusta, ME, Ellen (Gary) Brockwell and Craig Schoen, both of Petersburg, VA, Maria Schoen and John Schoen both of Garner, NC, and Darlene (Jonathan) Van Tilburg of Hobart; one great-grandchild: Carter Wilson of Augusta, ME; daughter-in-law: Carol Schoen of Hobart and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Friends and relatives are invited to call on the family from 4PM until 7PM on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 40 Cornell Ave., Hobart. A celebration of Celin's life will be held at 11AM on Thursday at the Hobart United Methodist Church, 204 Maple Ave., Hobart with the Rev. Dee Stevens officiating. Burial will follow at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross or the Heart of the Catskills Humane Society.
