Obituary of Erma W. MacArthur

HOBART _ Erma W. MacArthur, 91, of Hobart, passed away at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, on Monday, March 19, 2012, after a brief illness. She was born July 7, 1920, in Oneonta, the daughter of Arleigh Campbell and Annabelle (MacCracken) Hendry. She married LeRoy MacArthur on July 5, 1944, at North Kortright United Presbyterian Church, North Kortright. LeRoy passed away June 17, 2007. Erma was a graduate of Stamford Central School in the Class of 1937, Kingston City Hospital in 1940, and attended American University in 1942. A registered nurse, she worked as school nurse at Stamford Central School, did private duty nursing in Schenectady and owned and operated MacArthur Home Decorating in Hobart. She was a member of the Hobart Presbyterian Church for 60 years, a member of the Women's Association of the church and former secretary of the organization. She was appointed in 1982, as the first Hobart Village Historian and served in this capacity until her death. She cherished her role and membership in this organization. She was also an active member of Stamford-Hobart Inner Wheel, a member of Hobart Women's Civic Club and looked forward to the annual Bathgate Reunion Group luncheons. She is survived by three daughters, Lynda (Arthur) Turner, Hobart, MaryAlyce (Andrew) Peterson, Sidney, and JoAnn (Gary) Rockefeller, Bloomville; five grandchildren, Audra Peterson, Sidney, Erica (Jose) Espaillat, Webster, Fla., Alysha (Dylan) Sickles, Montgomery, Ind., Katelin (Brian) DeSilva, Niskayuna, and Garrett Rockefeller, Oneonta; six great-grandchildren, Madalyn and Gavin Sickles, Andres, Alycia and Ana Espaillat, and Emma DeSilva. She also leaves a sister-in-law, Wilma Youker; and brother-in-law, William Peters; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by two sisters, Evangeline MacLaury and Wylma Peters. Calling hours will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 22, 2012, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 23, 2012, at the Hobart Presbyterian Church, Hobart, with the Rev. Bert More officiating. Burial will follow the service in Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Hobart Presbyterian Church or the Hobart Historical Society.
