Obituary of Dorothy E. Johnson

Dorothy E. (Hitt) Johnson, 91, passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, November 26, 2016 at Mountainside Care Center, Margaretville. Born on June 9, 1925 in Bloomville, she was the daughter of the late Fred E. and Susan A. (Smith) Hitt, Sr. Dorothy was married to Malcolm E. Johnson on June 4, 1944 in Bloomville, a union that lasted over 57 years until his passing in 2003. Mrs. Johnson worked for over 40 years as a nursing aide for the former Bathgate Hospital, then for the former Community Hospital both in Stamford, and retiring from the former Delaware County Infirmary in Delhi. Dorothy enjoyed knitting, making afghans, mittens and slippers for her family and friends, writing letters to keep her friends and family informed and let them know she was thinking of them, spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, which she could often be found babysitting in their younger years. Family was important to Dorothy, she was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. She was always proud of her grandchildren's accomplishments and work ethic. Besides her parents and husband, Dorothy was predeceased by her son: Lynn Johnson; sons-in-law: Thomas Burdick and George Skog; two brothers; and three sisters. She is survived by two daughters: Linda (Dean Scherer, Jr.) Burdick and Sue Skog both of Bloomville; grandchildren: Amy (Billy) Vitarius of Bloomville, Joseph Burdick of Hobart, William (Kate Hume) Burdick of Bloomville, Stacy (Kyle) Osborn of Oneonta, Erik (Christine Wellington) Skog of Bloomville and Matthew Skog of Bloomville; five great-grandchildren: Lydia, Gage, Jon, Lukas and Liam; four brothers; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Private services were held by the family with Rev. Bert More officiating. Burial will be held in the spring at Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville. Arrangements are with MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.
