Obituary of John W. Powell

John (Jack) W. Powell Jr. 77, resident of Rome NY and former resident of Greensboro NC and Andes, NY passed away unexpectedly on Friday, December 2, 2016. Jack was born on September 9, 1939 in Brooklyn NY, the son of the late John William and Marion Little Powell. Jack is survived by his loving partner of 29 years, Margaret Murphy, of Forestport, NY, and her three sons, Douglas McMaster, Jason McMaster, and Jonathan McMaster; sister Ruth M. Powell and husband Fiorello (Sonny) Mincarelli of Lovingston, VA.; niece's Diane Mincarelli and partner, Jay Johnson, of Corinth, KY, Debbie Mincarelli and partner, Preston Miller, of Charlottesville, VA; Delores Mincarelli and husband Terry Cole of Cincinnati, OH; and Denise (Mincarelli) Gardner and husband, Gary, of Saugerties, NY; and grand-niece and nephews, Robert (Emmett) O'Neill, Shannon O'Neill and John (Jay) O'Neill all of Roslyndale, MA.

Jack graduated in the Andes Central School class of 1957. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1958 and was stationed in Korea, Japan, Germany, Tampa FL, Tucson, AZ, Goldsboro, NC and Rome, NY. He retired from the Air Force as a Master Sergeant, Aircraft Armament Systems Technician, serving for 27 years.

Jack was an avid hunter, fisherman, boater and golfer. He hunted in Germany with friends and his beloved dog, Leisel. When he was stationed in Goldsboro, NC, he took up golf, playing several days a week. He was stationed at Griffith's Airforce Base in Rome, NY, and met Margaret at the Rome Guys and Gals Singles Club. They had lots of fun with that group--cross country skiing, canoeing, hiking and believe it or not dancing. They shared many fond memories of the fun times with their Singles Club friends.

Diane and Jack enjoyed many fun times together when she worked in Oswego, NY, boating and waterskiing on Delta Lake. Jack especially enjoyed summers with Diane and her children Emmet, Shannon and Jay, introducing them to kayaking, fishing and boating.

Jack and Margaret rented a camp at Henderson Harbor on Lake Ontario to go fishing on his boat with their friends Dick and Colleen Schneible. He hunted with friends Gary VanValkenburg and Joe Fraser in Kentucky. Jack loved his time at Margaret's house on Kayuta Lake, boating and fishing. He was loved dearly by Margaret's dogs, Sparky and Sadie. Both Margaret and Sadie were with Jack in his final moments.

Graveside Services with full military honors will be held at 11:30AM on Friday, June 9, 2017 at Andes Cemetery, Andes.

The family requests that bequests may be made in Jack's memory to the NRA at www.nra.org or to Fisher House at www.fisherhouse.org
