Obituary of Maryann Stanton
Maryann Stanton, born on November 9, 1945, in Oneonta, NY, passed away peacefully, leaving a legacy of love and service. She was the cherished daughter of Leo Sweeney and Mary Spaziani. A proud "Lower Decker," Maryann attended St. Mary's School and graduated from Oneonta High School in 1963.
In 1965, she married her high school sweetheart, Bill Stanton, embarking on a lifelong journey together. During Bill's service as an airman in Selma, Alabama, Maryann began her distinguished career as a nurse, proudly serving for 38 years with an unwavering dedication to her patients.
In 1969, Maryann and Bill moved to Margaretville, NY, where they enjoyed raising their family among the wonderful Swart Street neighbors. Maryann was known for her storytelling, often sharing cherished memories of her childhood in Oneonta, her many cousins, her children, and her nursing experiences. She deeply loved music and seemed to have a song for every moment and thought. You would often find Maryann making her world-famous meatballs and sauce in the kitchen, humbly saying they were never as good as her mom’s.
Maryann was a devoted mother to her two sons, Chris (Ellie) of Schenevus and Jason (Lisa) of Bovina. In their retirement, she and Bill expanded their family by adopting four daughters: Kati (Nick) of Rochester, Stephanie (Anthony) of Toms River, NJ, Carly (Bobby) of Sacramento, CA, and Cecelia (AJ) of Traverse City, MI. Her boundless love extended to her cherished grandchildren: Stephanie, Courtney, Jack, Ian, Alex, Jamie, Albert, Frances, Dorothy, and Johnny, as well as great-grandchildren Gianna and Hailey.
Predeceased by her brother, Charles Sweeney, and sisters-in-law, Nancy Chicorelli (John) and Lenda Turner (Ken), Maryann is survived by her husband, Bill of Margaretville; brother-in-law, Scott of Oneonta; sister-in-law, Alice of Goodyear Lake; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends whose lives she touched deeply. She was incredibly grateful for her close friends over the years and the recent help of Shirley, Edde Jean, Terry, Dalton, Robert, and Mary.
Maryann's legacy of kindness, service, and love will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her. A celebration of Maryann’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 1st, at Saint James Episcopal Church at Lake Delaware, 55 Lake Delaware Drive, Delhi, NY, with Rev. Paul Moore, celebrant. A private burial will take place in Margaretville Cemetery Annex at a later date. In place of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Margaretville Fire Department in her memory.
