
Obituary of Barbara May Doubleday
Barbara May Doubleday, 86, of Bloomville, passed away on January 30, 2025 at her home.
Born on October 27, 1938 in Nashua, NH, Barbara was the daughter of the late Warren N. and Sigrid (Manty) Doubleday.
She received a bachelor's degree from Middlebury College in Vermont where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority, Barbara then received a master’s degree from the University of Hartford in Connecticut and studied for her doctorate at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas.
Barbara began her career teaching Junior High School English in Glastonbury, CT and Buffalo, NY. She moved to the Bloomville area in 1971 and went on to teach 26 years as a Professor of English at SUNY Delhi until her retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1998.
She enjoyed the outdoors, and all that nature had to offer, often spending time at her family cabin in Massachusetts, where she taught her sons how to fish. Barbara enjoyed playing cards, especially skät and bridge, playing in local card groups was one of her favorite pastimes. She also learned to play trumpet and bugle as a youth, and in her later years liked to collect antiques.
Besides her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her sister: Lois D. Howe.
She is survived by her sons: Philip R. and Mark O. Alban both of Maplewood, NJ; a sister: Sandra D. DeCosta, of N. Adams, MA; seven grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held at 11AM on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at the Bloomville United Methodist Church, 35 Church Street, Bloomville, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to American Heart Association or American Cancer Society.
