Obituary of Tammy L. Mytelka
Tammy L. Mytelka, 62, of Gloversville, passed away on January 31, 2025, at Nathan Littauer Hospital, surrounded by family.
Born on April 12, 1962 in Gloversville, Tammy was the daughter of the late Bert and Flora Jean (Schaffer) Decker. She was raised in Caroga Lake, attended Wheelerville School, and was a 1980 graduate of Johnstown High School.
In her early years, she worked as a respiratory therapist at Nathan Littauer Hospital. Tammy found her calling as a realtor in 1985 and enjoyed a vibrant career spanning forty years, first with the A&S Agency in Mayfield, then as Managing Broker of Better Homes and Gardens Illustrated Properties in Mayfield, and in her later years, with Coldwell Banker in Johnstown. Tammy helped thousands of families find homes and lake properties across the region. She was recognized as the Fulton County Realtor of the Year in 1990 and 1998 and served as President of the Fulton County Board of Realtors. Tammy made friends everywhere she went, and was known for her long phone calls, keeping in constant touch with family, friends, and colleagues spread across the country.
Tammy was a passionate cook, volunteer, and loved the theater. She cared deeply for her community and was honored with the Fulton County Chamber of Commerce Jenny Award in 2010. She volunteered and served on many boards, including the Glove Theater, Foothills Family Productions, Saratoga Children’s Theatre, Hadassah, and Gloversville Schools PTA. She also served as a board member for the Knesseth Israel Synagogue in Gloversville, where she found great joy in cooking for the congregation.
All who knew Tammy knew her cooking. If there were six guests, there would be food for twelve. If there were twelve guests, there would be food for thirty. She was best known for her latkes, lasagna, and pumpkin pie. Tammy was a prolific baker with a mind-boggling suite of holiday cookies delivered to friends and neighbors each year, and impromptu zucchini bread and banana bread loaves delivered seemingly daily.
Above all, Tammy’s deepest passion was her family. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband, Jan Mytelka, and her brother, Paul Decker Sr. She is survived by her son Greg Mytelka of Brooklyn, her son and daughter-in-law, Alex and Sarah Mytelka of Saratoga Springs, and their sweet daughter, Willa. For the past two and a half years, Tammy’s greatest joy was spending time with her granddaughter. They enjoyed many sleepovers, reading, and baking cookies together.
Tammy is also survived by her loving sister Cathy (Bill) Sartin of Gloversville; nieces and nephews: Lyndy (Patrick) Sanger of Albany, their sons Lincoln and Luke (who called great-aunt Tammy his “best girl”); Alysha (Krista) Sartin-Jensen of Gloversville, their son Kaiser; Paul (Jessica) Decker of Delhi, their sons Grant and Garrett; Melissa (Mike) Dingmon of Gloversville, their son Ryan; and Kristy (Greg) Migirditch and their daughter Samantha.
A celebration of Tammy’s life will be held in Caroga Lake in the late Spring. Private burial will take place at the Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.
Contributions in memory of Tammy may be made to the Caroga Lake Arts Collective, the Paul Nigra Center for Creative Arts, the Knesseth Israel Synagogue, or a charity of your choice.
