Obituary of Everett Burger, Jr.
Everett Burger, Jr., better known as “Big Ev”, 81, of East Meredith, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2020.
He was born on August 7, 1939 in Tappan, NY, son of the late Sadie and Everett Burger Sr. He grew up in New City, NY and graduated from Clarkstown High School in 1958. He served in the Navy until his honorable discharge in 1966. On April 13, 1963, he married his wife Joan who survives him.
They eventually settled on South Mountain Road in New City where they raised their four children along with a menagerie of animals and a large vegetable garden. During his time on South Mountain Road, Ev enjoyed spending his time hunting, fishing, cooking, woodworking and going to auctions, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Ev was known as the patriarch of the family who has always brought the extended family together and helped hold it together.
Ev’s dream of owning a comp of his own in the Adirondacks came true after he and his father found a piece of property on Union Falls Pond. A 10 x 10 cabin was relocated from Otsego Lake to its current location. Over the years the camp increased in size and is now the Camp on Union Falls Pond, where family and friends have gathered and will continue to gather for years to come.
In 2009, Ev and Joan relocated to their beautiful retirement home in East Meredith, where Ev found solitude and peacefulness of rural living which brought back memories of his younger days. Ev enjoyed living in the country and meeting so many dear friends who he enjoyed visiting with. Ev was always eager to share his fresh vegetables, his homemade soup or his fresh sauerkraut.
Ev was a very original man and only others that truly knew him could understand the kindness and love that he brought to our everyday lives.
He will be missed by his wife: Joan; children: Everett (Jeannie), Karin Carron (John), Michael (Trish) and Scott; grandchildren: Hannah, Lucas, Phoebe, Macayla and Sean; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Ev was predeceased by a grandson: Alex; and sisters: Peggy Heath, Patricia DeBaun and Nancy Meehan.
A Celebration of Ev's life will be held at 11AM on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church, 15673 State Highway 23, Davenport, NY.
