Obituary of Lois R. Newkerk

~~Lois R. Newkerk, passed away Sunday morning, July 16, 2017 on her 83rd birthday, at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.

Born on July 16, 1934 in Delhi, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Helen (Bouton) Rider.

Lois was married to James W. Newkerk on February 15, 1958 in Waterville, NY

She was employed for several years with CADI at SUNY Delhi and was also the Town of Hamden Tax Collector for many years.

Mrs. Newkerk was a gifted artist and enjoyed painting, ceramics, crocheting and decorating, Lois was known for her seasonal porch decorations, which many in the DeLancey area looked forward to. She also enjoyed playing the organ and bowling.  She was a member of the American Legion Post #190 Auxiliary in Delhi, the Hamden Senior Citizens and Lois was an active member of the DeLancey United Presbyterian Church where she and James were members of the Couples Club. 

Lois was predeceased by two infant children: James and Cheryl; and sisters: Sally Eldred and Marilyn Weaver.

Besides her husband of over 59 years, James W. Newkerk of DeLancey, Lois is survived by two daughters: Joni R. (William) Wilson of Gloversville and Jane N. Alverson of DeLancey; grandchildren: Brett (Amanda) Wilson of Nashville, TN and Jenelle (Ryan) Wheeler of Averill Park; great-grandson: Ryder James Wilson; sister-in-law: Sylvia D. Newkerk; brothers-in-law: Timothy Eldred and B. Michael Weaver; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends and relatives are invited to call on the family from 10AM until Noon on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at the DeLancey United Presbyterian Church, County Highway 2, DeLancey, where a funeral service will follow at the church at Noon with the Rev. Patty Wolff officiating. Burial will be at Hamden Cemetery.
