Obituary of Leslie L. Albaugh

~~Leslie L. Albaugh, 73, of Hamden died peacefully at home in the company of her loved ones on Thursday, June 22, 2017, following a long illness. Leslie was predeceased by her devoted husband of 54 years, Horace “Nick” Albaugh, Jr., who died in 2016.

Leslie is survived by her daughters, Dallas Albaugh of Sunnyside, NY, Jennifer (Albaugh) Picher of Wappingers Falls, NY, Alexis Albaugh of Redwood City, CA, and Renee Albaugh of Hamden, NY; and her grandchildren, Delilah Picher of Wappingers Falls, NY, and Lukas and Natalie Sorm of Sunnyside, NY. She is also survived by her sister, Frances (Floster) Maziarczyk, and her brother, Richard Floster.

She was born in Summit, NJ on June 18, 1944, the daughter of the late Leslie and Lorraine (Hartwig) Floster. She graduated from Millburn High School in 1962, and attended Michigan State University where she met Nick.

Leslie moved to Hamden in the early 1970s with Nick where they raised their four daughters and resided until their deaths. Leslie was witty, kind, and generous. She was a loving mother who devoted her life to the happiness of her daughters.

Mrs. Albaugh loved nature and wildlife. She found great pleasure observing hummingbirds visiting at her fuchsias and chickadees hunting for seeds in the wintertime. Leslie enjoyed sharing the wonders of nature with her children, taking them for hikes behind her house, pointing out tiny wild strawberries and blueberries, and showing the children where they could drink water from a mountain spring.
 
Leslie’s kindness extended to animals, and she cared for many pets over the years, including macaw parrots, horses, dogs, cats, and even a skunk. In New York City, Leslie worked as a veterinarian technician at that Animal Medical Center in the intensive care unit where she helped treat animals in crisis. After Leslie moved to Hamden, neighbors would call on her to help with their pets. 

She also enjoyed cooking, baking, reading, gardening, debating the finer points of grammar, competitive games of Scrabble, crossword puzzles, keeping up with her French, enjoying coffee with neighbors, festive family dinners followed by hours of board games, collecting antiques and vintage clothes, and flea marketing. Leslie and Nick enjoyed watching Jeopardy together, engaging in a battle of wits.

Leslie was delighted to become a grandmother and she found great happiness having her grandchildren visit and explore the farm in Hamden.

She will be greatly missed, but she will live on in the hearts of those whose lives she touched.

No services will be held. Rather, the family requests that those wishing to honor Leslie pay a kindness forward to someone else and/or donate to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care.
