Obituary of Erna Kathmann Chichester

~~Erna Kathmann Chichester, 87, of East Meredith died peacefully in her sleep at her home in East Meredith, on May 13, 2017.

She was born August 17, 1929, in Delhi, the daughter of  Erna Hohls Kathmann and Henry W. Kathmann. She married Leon D. Chichester March 25, 1951.

A Delaware County resident all her life, she was a graduate of Delaware Academy and Delhi Tech College.  She was a homemaker  and mother and then became a Census Taker for the US Census Bureau until 1992.

She was a lifelong active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Delhi, served as Tax Collector for the Town of Meredith, loved Delaware County and her extended Kathmann family.  In recent years she became involved in the Town of Meredith Historical Society, took many bus sightseeing trips, and enjoyed participating in Senior Citizen activities.

She was a naturally curious and inquisitive person who loved learning.  Her interests included travel having visited 48 states and many countries on 5 continents, gardening, reading, puzzles and spending time with family and friends.

She is predeceased by son Alan K. in 1963, husband Leon D. Sr. in 1992, brother Henry C. Kathmann and sister MaryAnn Roscino.

She is survived by four children Linda Wiehl (Robert) of Bradenton, FL, Pamela Chichester (Robert Hill) of Woodland Hills, CA, Douglas Chichester (Basha Berl) of Port Townsend, WA, Leon Chichester (Sarah) of Vienna, Austria, four grandchildren Christopher Wiehl (Alison) of Bethel CT, Erik Wiehl (Kelly) of Bradenton, FL, Dalton Chichester and Tivoli Chichester of Vienna, Austria, and five great-grandchildren Lori, William, Rayne, Grayson and Cole, and many nieces and nephews and Kathmann cousins.  She is also survived by former exchange student "son" Carlos Bastos and family of Orlando, FL.

Funeral services will be at 11 AM, Saturday, May 27th at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 565 Andes Rd., Delhi, NY 13753 with Rev. John Priest officiating.  A private burial will be at Woodland Cemetery at a later date.  Calling hours will be 4-7 PM, Friday, May 26th at Hall & Peet Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Delhi.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund in her memory.
